You'll need about
2.3 m
≈ 2.75 yards of 150 cm-wide fabric
This is a starting estimate. Always buy a little extra for shrinkage, matching and mistakes, and check your actual pattern's fabric requirements before cutting.

For 150 cm-wide fabric and a standard size, expect roughly: a blouse ~1.4 m, a skirt ~1.5 m, a day dress ~2.3 m, a maxi or evening dress ~3.4 m, a jacket ~2.4 m, and a couture or wedding gown ~5 m. Narrower fabric needs more, and always buy a little extra for shrinkage, matching and mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
- How much fabric do I need for a dress?
- A simple day dress needs roughly 2–2.5 m of 150 cm-wide fabric for a standard size; a full maxi or evening dress needs around 3.5 m, and a couture or wedding gown 5 m or more. Narrower fabric (90–115 cm) needs noticeably more. Use the calculator above to adjust for your garment, width and size.
- Why does fabric width change how much I need?
- Pattern pieces are laid across the fabric width. Wider fabric (150 cm) fits more pieces side by side, so you need less length; narrow fabric (90 cm) forces pieces to stack lengthwise, so you need more meters. The calculator scales the estimate to the width you choose.
- Should I buy extra fabric?
- Yes. Always add a margin for shrinkage (pre-washing), cutting mistakes, and matching directional prints, stripes or large repeats. The calculator adds about 15% when you tick the directional/nap option, but a little extra on top is always wise.
- Is this calculator exact?
- No — it is a planning estimate based on typical yardage charts. Exact requirements depend on your specific pattern, style lines, seam allowances and how efficiently pieces are laid out. Always check your pattern envelope before buying for a real project.
- How do professional ateliers track fabric?
- They track stock in meters with a cost per meter, log how much each order consumes, and get alerts before they run low. That is exactly what Bomble does — fabric inventory, usage per order and low-stock reorder alerts — so an atelier never runs out mid-gown or ties up cash in dead stock.
